Where Is the Starter Motor? A Parts Guy's Field Guide (and the Mistake That Taught Me to Look Deeper)

The first time I had to answer 'where is the starter motor' for a customer, I was holding a flashlight and pretending I knew what I was looking for. I didn't. That cost me two hours, one tow, and a fairly awkward phone call to the shop owner.

I've been on the parts and service side since 2017, spending most of that time at an independent repair shop. I'm the guy who writes the checklists now, so I've learned to count my mistakes: 14 significant ones, totaling roughly $6,800 in wasted budget. The starter-location episode was one of my earliest, but it keeps coming back because people ask me the same question all the time: Where is the starter motor?

What a starter motor actually looks like

A starter motor is a cylindrical electric motor, usually about the size of a large banana, with a smaller cylinder (the solenoid) mounted on top. It has a thick battery cable connected to it—that's the easiest visual clue. The cable is heavy, often red, and it disappears into the starter solenoid.

If you can find that thick positive cable from the battery, you can usually find the starter. The starter sits at the junction of the engine and the transmission bellhousing. On a longitudinal engine (front to rear), it's almost always low on the side of the block. On a transverse engine (side to side), it's often in the back, near the firewall, and you'll want to reach it from below.

Common starter locations by layout

  • Transverse engine (most front-wheel-drive cars): Starter is typically on the rear side of the engine, near the transmission. Accessibility ranges from annoying to 'why would anyone design it like this.'
  • Longitudinal engine (most rear-wheel-drive cars and trucks): Starter is low on the engine block, usually on the lower side, right where the engine meets the bellhousing. Often easier to see from underneath.
  • Older SBC engines: On a small block Chevy, the starter is on the passenger side, low near the oil pan rail. And the SBC mechanical fuel pump? That's on the driver side, lower front. People mix them up because they're both low on the block, but they're not interchangeable.

The funny part is, 'where is the starter motor' is rarely the real question. The real question is usually one of two things: 'is this clicking sound the starter?' or 'why won't my engine crank?'

The click that isn't the starter

Here's a misconception I see in the shop all the time: A rapid clicking sound under the hood means the starter is dying.

It's tempting to think that, because the starter is what turns the engine over. But that click is often the starter solenoid trying to engage while the battery voltage collapses. In my experience, battery and cable problems cause more no-starts than actual starter failures. AAA's roadside assistance data backs this up: battery and charging system issues are consistently the top no-start cause (Source: AAA, 2023).

People think the starter is the problem because it's the part that 'does the work.' Actually, a weak battery makes the solenoid chatter. The starter is the victim, not the culprit.

The mistake that changed my diagnostic routine

In July 2021, I had a customer with a 2012 Malibu that wouldn't start after a long highway drive. He was sure it was the starter. The starter was in a spot I didn't expect—below the exhaust manifold, tucked tight against the transmission—and I was sure it was heat soak. I ordered a replacement starter anyway. Not cheap.

When the new starter arrived, I got the car on the lift and found something I'd missed during the driveway check. The radiator fin pack was packed with debris from the road: fuzz, grass, and what looked like a fast food receipt. The engine had been running hot for weeks. That heat had soaked into the starter and made it act like it was dead. The original starter worked fine once it cooled. The real problem was the cooling system. I'd just spent $210 on a part the car didn't need.

Heat soak and starter location

Starter heat soak isn't just a Malibu thing. Any starter mounted near the exhaust manifold can fail when hot and work fine when cold. If the car won't start after driving but starts after sitting, don't automatically replace the starter. Check for overheated conditions, blocked radiator fins, and cooling fan operation first.

A fuel pump problem disguised as a starter problem

In September 2022, a vintage pickup with a failed SBC mechanical fuel pump was towed in for 'starter replacement.' The starter was fine. The truck cranked for days as long as the battery held charge, but the mechanical fuel pump wasn't delivering fuel.

The fix wasn't a starter. It was a fuel pump, and it cost the owner far less than the tow bill he'd already paid.

On an SBC, the mechanical fuel pump sits low on the driver side of the block, just below the cylinder heads. It's a roughly triangular metal housing with a fuel line and an actuating arm. The starter is behind the exhaust manifold on the passenger side. They're close enough to confuse if you're in a hurry, and a failed fuel pump feels like a no-start to a driver even though it isn't a cranking problem.

If the engine cranks but won't start, the starter did its job. Stop blaming it and check fuel, spark, and compression.

So where to look first?

Here's the practical checklist I use now, and it's saved us a lot of unnecessary starter replacements:

  1. Turn on the headlights. If they're dim, the battery is weak. Test the battery before touching the starter.
  2. Find the thick positive battery cable and follow it. The other end is almost always the starter solenoid.
  3. If the vehicle is transverse, plan to go underneath. If the vehicle is longitudinal, look low on the block near the bellhousing.
  4. If the engine cranks but won't run, look at fuel and spark. On a small block Chevy, check the SBC mechanical fuel pump before ordering a starter.
  5. If it ran hot before it quit, check the radiator fins and cooling fan. Starter heat soak is real.

Replacing a starter can cost anywhere from $250 to $700 including parts and labor, depending on the vehicle and access (based on major repair shop estimates, January 2025; verify current pricing). Replacing the wrong part costs less—but it doesn't fix the car, and it doesn't solve the problem.

I keep a small shelf of Valeo parts in the stockroom, including their hybrid wiper blades and a few starters. The hybrid wiper blades are great, but they don't help you find a starter. For that, you need a flashlight, a clear head, and the willingness to question your first assumption.

The lesson I keep re-learning

People think experience means having all the answers. In my case, it means having a list of wrong guesses I already made. The starter motor location is not a trick question. It's a reminder that what looks like a starter problem is often a battery problem, a fuel problem, a ground problem, or a heat problem.

Know where the starter is, but know what makes it fail. That's what actually cures the mystery.
